Youth Squad Training Days
For the last two Saturday’s our youth squad have been taking advantage of some extra coaching sessions as they prepare for the Youth Climbing Series Final in Sheffield at the end of the month. With two weeks down and two to go we caught up with coaches Matt Berry and Scott Donaldson to see how the preparations are going.
“Week 1 we worked specifically on dynamic moves that we think will come up in competition. This type of problem is becoming much more common as there’s a higher chance of falling on them, you just have to look at the World Cup to see that,” explained Matt. “It’s a hard style of movement to learn and one that we want to get the kids as comfortable with as possible, it also happens to be a huge amount of fun! It was great to have Max Milne with us, as a member of Team GB he knows more about this style of comp problems than anyone and gave some great insights to the kids.”
“Week 2 we had a mock bouldering competition, it allows us to see how they approach the different blocs and helps us discuss tactics for whatever they come up against in Sheffield. It also lets the squad get used to climbing together so if they know who to look out for and support at a major competition. I’m sure they’ll have a great time,” continued Scott.
Next week the kids will move to the main walls for a mock competition on routes before finishing off with an open session the week before the competition. If you see them out and about please wish them luck!
Thank you to Iain Bain for the amazing photograph of the athletes and their coaches. Good luck everyone!
